Densham disappointed after tire smoking effort
TOPEKA, Kan. (June 3) - Funny Car driver Gary Densham had high hopes for this weekend’s 19th annual O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka but it just wasn’t in the cards as he fell victim to traction trouble.
Densham’s 4.889-seconds and 311.27-mph fourth place qualifying effort pitted him against the 12th place qualifier, seasoned veteran Jim Head, in the first round of Sunday's final eliminations. Unfortunately an underperforming engine led to tire shake and smoke just a couple of hundred feet from the starting line, ending his chances of earning a win.
Densham felt the Torco Racing Fuels / Racebricks Collectables team had a real shot at winning the event.
“We didn’t get beat by anybody else but ourselves,?? a disappointed Densham said. “We felt so good with what we had accomplished, our confidence was up and then the monkey jumped on our backs again. This has to be the most disappointing weekend of the 2007 season for us.??
Densham rolled through the quarter-mile timers at 7.994-seconds and 115.57-mph to Head’s winning 4.889-seconds at 311-27-mph.
“When the number one and number three teams in points can’t even qualify for the show, that ought to tell you how competitive the NHRA Funny Car field has become,?? Densham said .“I guess if you look at it like that, we didn’t do so bad after all.
“We did prove, if to no one other than ourselves, that we can run in the heat and with all of these back-to-back races coming up, that’s a good thing.
