Anderson, Line earn No. 1 and No. 2 for a chance at $50,000 in King Demon
Crown
JOLIET, Ill. (June 3, 2007) – KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment
drivers, Greg Anderson and Jason Line, qualified for this year’s 23rd
running of the NHRA King Demon Crown, a special race-within-a-race event for
Pro Stock drivers run next weekend in conjunction with the 10th annual NHRA
Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.
With qualifying reduced to 22 events, rather than the scheduled 23, due to
the cancellation and rescheduling of the Bristol race, Anderson, who was
born in Duluth, Minn., and now lives in the Charlotte, N. C. area, secured
the No. 1 position of the eight qualified drivers. His teammate Line, who
like Anderson, is a Minnesota native, was born in Wright, Minn., and now
also lives in the Charlotte, N. C. area, took the No. 2 spot.
Racers accrue points based on their qualifying position at each of the 22
national events contested preceding the King Demon Crown event. A No. 1
qualifying effort is worth 175 points, dropping 10 points per position
through No. 4, which is worth 145 points. The No. 5 qualifier is awarded 140
points, dropping 5 points per position down to No. 16, which is worth 85
points. Drivers who do not qualify for an event do not earn points at that
race.
The KB Racing duo of Anderson and Line collected 17 of the 22 available No.
1 qualifying spots during the 22-race qualifying span for the King Demon
Crown
The three-time and defending NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion Anderson, who
won the King Demon Crown last year and in 2004 and was runner-up in 2003,
collected 11 No. 1s during the qualifying span, earning the top spot. He
accumulated 3,600 points.
“It’s a great feather in the cap of crew chief Rob Downing and all the crew
on the Summit Racing Pontiac that I drive,” said Anderson following the
close of qualifying at the NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park
Topeka, the final event at which drivers could accumulate points for the
King Demon Crown.
“They earned it. Obviously, they are in charge of how that car runs and
performs. It’s how that car qualifies through the season. It has nothing
to do with driver reaction time or anything like that. It’s the crew that
put us No. 1. I’m just the lucky guy that gets to drive it.
“Starting from the No. 1 position gives me confidence. I think we’re
peaking at the right time and have a great shot at taking home another big
King Demon check.”
Reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion Line, with six No. 1s during the
qualifying span, was runner-up for the Crown in 2006 and 2005, earned the
second spot with 3,390 points.
Line echoed Anderson’s comments. “The bottom line is that if it was not for
the crew on both of these Summit Pontiacs, neither Greg or I would be in a
position to go after the King Demon Crown at Chicago. I’ve been runner-up
at the past two King Demon Crown events. This year I would like to take it
to the next level. No matter the outcome, we want to keep this title in the
KB Racing family,” said Line.
Both Anderson and Line will pull their KB Racing LLC-owned, Summit Racing
Equipment Pontiac GTOs to the starting line at noon on Saturday, June 9, for
the first round of this year’s King Demon Crown. In the opening round,
Anderson will face V. Gaines, who earned the No. 8 position; while, Line
will square off against Greg Stanfield, who qualified seventh.
The remaining opening round match ups find No. 3 Allen Johnson vs. No. 6
Mike Edwards and No. 4 Dave Connolly vs. No. 5 Kurt Johnson.
The two remaining rounds are scheduled as follows: round 2 (semifinals) at 3
p.m. and the final round at 4:25 p.m. All qualifying times for the King
Demon Crown are local Chicago/Joliet time (CT) and subject to change.
With a total purse of $145,000 and a race payout of $76,000, the winner of
this year’s King Demon Crown receives $50,000, while the runner-up takes
home $10,000. The two semifinalists walk away with $3,000 each and the four
fist-round finishers each earn $2,500. Additionally, the low qualifier at
each of the 22 qualifying events earns $3,000 (a total of $66, 000)
Note: All King Demon Crown points are unofficial until they are verified and
released by NHRA.
