Graves, Hauenstein, Bender and Sipe Victorious at SSP on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (June 2, 2007) - Stock Car Saturday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park found Cal Graves picking up the Late Model feature. 2006 SSP Street Stock Champion, Brian Hauenstein became the first repeat winner in the highly competitive division. Bob Bender Jr. from Manheim won his first SSP career Xtreme Stock feature as Daryl Sipe returned to victory lane in the York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van race. Kevin Armstrong on the XSC Rookie Rumble feature.
Sam Leonard, Jr. jumped out to the early lead in the 20-lap Late Model feature event from his outside the front row starting spot. Leonard continued to lead early in the race over Jeremy Knoll until his teammate Carl Graves moved into the second spot on Lap 4. For the next 8 laps, the Leinbach Motorsports team cars battle side-by-side. Graves took the lead just after the halfway mark and held onto the front spot to win his first of the season. Gene Wrightstone and Scott Richwine put on a great show for second with Wrightstone finishing just ahead of Richwine for second. Point leader Carl Billet, Jr. stayed very close to the battle in front of him to finish fourth. Sterling Kinard rounded out the top five. Spots six through ten were Charlie Potts, Leonard, Jr., Randy Christine, Jr., Chuck Yingling, Jr. and Tommy Blackwell.
An eight car accident on the first lap of the 20-lap Street Stock event slowed the action early, but once racing resumed, Joey Hoffer jumped out to the early lead. Hoffer continued to lead until Brian Hauenstein took the lead from him midway through the race on lap 10. Hauenstein went on to pick up the victory over Wes Alleman and Steven Dove. Paul Morgan and Hoffer rounded out the top five.
The 30-lap Xtreme Stock Car feature was exciting for the entire race from start to finish. Polesitter Bill Fulton jumped out to the early lead and was overtaken by Jason Failor on the sixth circuit. Failor continued to lead over a large pack of three wide racing until Bob Bender, Jr. on the 13th lap. Side-by-side racing continued for the remainder of the race. Bender held on for his first feature win at SSP. Ray Broderick got by Mike Goodwin for second at the finish. Goodwin held on to third with Sam Rial and Failor rounding out the top five.
In the 10-lap York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van feature, Daryl Sipe took the lead from Brandon Hedstrom on the second lap and went on to win the race. Current SSP point leader, Brandon Ort finished second after starting in the eighth position. Jason Anderson, Hedstrom and Kimberly Martino rounded out the top five.
The next Saturday night event will be next week, June 9 when Stock Car Saturday Night returns with the Late Models, Street Stocks, Xtreme Stock Cars, Classic Cars and the Mini Vans. The Clean Technologies Young Guns Shootout will return for round three of the six round series featuring Street Stocks drivers 21 years of age and younger. Eric Walker and Chad Smith are tied for the lead going into round three with 17 points. Dave Thompson, Jr. is currently in third with 8 points. The remainder of the Young Guns are Joey Hoffer (5), Calvin Herman (3), Jenn Scott (1) and Garrett Shover (1).
General Admission Grandstand ticket prices for Saturday night will be Adults and Teens (13 & older) $12.00; Children (12 & under) are free. Pit pass prices are $20.00 with a reduced price of $18.00 for all pit competitor license holders. The minimum age requirement to purchase a pit pass is 14 years of age with a copy of a birth certificate is required for all ages 14 to 17.
The pit gates will open 4:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5:00 p.m. Warmups begin at 6:30 p.m. with qualifying races at 7:00 p.m. followed by consolation races and feature events.
