NO. 8 IS GREAT FOR MORGAN LUCAS
TOPEKA (June 2) – Morgan Lucas can now take a hearty exhale and breath a lot easier now that he qualified in the No. 8 position and can start relishing his Lucas Oil’s team efforts at Heartland Park Topeka’s 19th annual running of the O’Reilly Summer Nationals.
He has to race David Grubnic for the 12th time of his career and for the record it stands at five wins for Lucas against six wins for Grubnic and there would be nothing more satisfying for the Brownsburg, Ind.-resident than to even the score after the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
“Grubnic’s bunch is going to be tough to beat tomorrow,” said Lucas, the first pair out on Sunday where he will have the lane choice. “We couldn’t be any happier ourselves by qualifying solidly in the race. It’s good to have my mind back in the game and we want to continue our climb back into contention.”
He qualified with an elapsed time of 4.619 seconds, 323.04 mph from his Friday’s pass and on Saturday ran a time of 4.688 seconds at a speed of 315.05 mph in negotiating a slippery quarter-mile.
“Rahn (Tobler, crew chief) and Lance (Larson, car chief) have been putting their thoughts together and the end result is getting us down the track. That’s a big relief for us after struggling in the last two events. I feel if you can run in the 4.60s on Sunday, you have a great chance of winning. That’s all we want is a chance and I think we can make some good strides on Sunday.”
Lucas’ career record at HPT is two semi-final finishes (05 Larry Dixon and 06 Doug Kalitta) and in 2005 he reset his career best speed here when he blazed through the clocks with a speed of 328.94 mph. Also on that run he set low ET of the event in 05 with a time of 4.502 seconds.
ESPN2-HD will air the final round highlights at 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday, June 3.
