Densham eyes Topeka race for first win of the season
TOPEKA, Kan. (May 30) - Following an unexpected break in the season schedule, NHRA Funny Car driver Gary Densham is hopeful that an extra week off is what the Torco Racing Fuels/Racebricks Collectables team needed to turn their luck around and get to the winner's circle.
“When it was announced that the Bristol, Tenn., race was postponed, I thought this just might be what our guys need,?? Densham said. “Sometimes all it takes is a little diversion to turn things around and that’s what we’re hoping for.
“If it wasn’t the weather cutting short qualifying at a couple of races this year, then it was just plain old bad luck that’s kept us from going rounds during final eliminations. But I’ve been doing this long enough to know you just have to keep pushing and sooner or later luck is going to come back to our camp.??
The former high school shop teacher from Bellflower, Calif., will be piloting his 300-plus mph Chevy Monte Carlo SS this weekend at the 18th annual O’Reilly NHRA Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.
“Heartland Park is a great facility, and nothing would be better than to have that Wally in our possession Sunday afternoon,?? Densham said. “Our team knows how to get this hot rod down the track and we’d like nothing more than to show our fans and sponsors that we mean business, by going all four elimination rounds on Sunday.??
