A few simple precautions can make all the difference when it comes to protecting their cars

MECHANICSBURG, Pa., May 24 -- Gas prices are up, but that won't stop thousands of Pennsylvanians from hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend and during the summer vacation season. Whether drivers are planning a trip to the Jersey Shore or the California coast, the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority (ATPA) wants to remind them to take the proper precautions to protect themselves from auto theft.

"Sometimes, we're so excited and carefree about vacationing that basic safety tips fall off our radar screens," said Michelle Staton, executive director of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority. "There are many simple things drivers can do to protect themselves from theft, which is especially important when they are in unfamiliar locations. Locking doors, keeping luggage and valuables hidden and parking in well-lit, high-traffic areas will keep cars - and their drivers, safer."

In addition, as the weather gets warmer, it is imperative for drivers to "Lock It or Lose It" - lock their vehicles and take their keys - even during quick errands, when it might be tempting to leave the air conditioning on and the car running unattended. It is also important to remember that older vehicles can be just as attractive to thieves as newer models. Additional auto theft prevention tips are available on the Auto Theft Prevention Authority's web site at http://www.watchyourcar.org/ .

About the Auto Theft Prevention Authority

Established by the General Assembly (Act 171 of 1994), the Auto Theft Prevention Authority exists to establish, coordinate and fund activities to prevent, combat and reduce automobile theft in Pennsylvania. Today, the Authority funds 13 law enforcement/investigative units and several public- outreach programs. The Authority uses no tax dollars, but is supported by annual assessments from auto insurance companies doing business in Pennsylvania. These funds facilitate a cooperative effort by the insurance industry, law enforcement agencies and the citizens of the Commonwealth. For more information please visit http://www.watchyourcar.org/ .
