CHICAGO, March 23 -- NAVTEQ , a leading provider of digital map data for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions, today announced BMW Group has selected it as the primary map supplier on BMW Group's newest navigation system and to lead a new pan-European marketing and distribution campaign for map updates. NAVTEQ was chosen to further expand its position as BMW Group's map supplier based on the strong historic relationship and its automotive grade map quality. BMW Group's designation of NAVTEQ for the map update program recognizes NAVTEQ's proven ability to drive an increase in customer satisfaction and business.
NAVTEQ Maps will be used on selected BMW Group navigation systems within the next 24 months. NAVTEQ will provide maps for all models in 89% of countries offering the system. In addition to Western Europe, this also includes Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South Africa, and South Korea. BMW Group's selection of NAVTEQ for the new platform validates NAVTEQ's position as the premier provider of superior navigable digital maps worldwide.
In addition, now all BMW drivers will have increased access to the latest maps of Europe as NAVTEQ works with BMW Group to design marketing programs that increase awareness, access and affordability. NAVTEQ Map updates on both DVD and CD are expected to be widely available to BMW drivers for an attractive price throughout much of Europe by May 2007. Research shows that map updates are essential to consumer satisfaction with their navigation systems, which ultimately impacts their satisfaction with the vehicle itself. BMW Group is entrusting this critical program to NAVTEQ, confirming NAVTEQ's proven leadership in this area.
"BMW Group's selection of NAVTEQ as the leading supplier and global launch leader reinforces their confidence in our maps and our ability to deliver new content as it will expand map-based content," said Jeff Mize, Senior Vice President, Vehicle, NAVTEQ Corporation.
"We've spent years investing in and developing the ability to drive the sale of map updates in conjunction with our customers and have a formal Renewal Program for Maps (RPM)," continued Mize. "BMW Group's selection of NAVTEQ to lead such a broad map update program speaks to our proven capabilities in this area and is an extension of the wide range of services we already provide to BMW. The scope of these awards further expands our close relationship with BMW Group and also increases our business with them."
NAVTEQ's leading position has been achieved through the uniqueness and integrity of the build processes that deliver a map database of unmatched quality at one worldwide specification. To deliver accuracy in line with expectations, NAVTEQ has over 600 geographic analysts strategically located around the world who drive the roads, verifying and updating information in the NAVTEQ database. These analysts are essential in establishing the quality of both the initial maps and the map updates.
