DETROIT - May 11, 2007: The NASCAR Car of Tomorrow is scheduled to debut in 16 of the 2007 Nextel Series races. Following the death of legendary driver Dale Earnhardt in 2001, NASCAR officials set out to create a safer vehicle.

To accomplish this task, NASCAR employed various auto manufacturers to design a car that is safer and more aerodynamic. When designing the car, manufacturers had to look at improving three primary areas: driver safety, competitive capabilities and manufacturer identity within the vehicle.

The final result is an automobile that more closely resembles street cars like Jeff Gordon’s Impala SS. Officials say the NASCAR Car of Tomorrow will also help save money since the vehicle can be tuned to work on all of NASCAR’s tracks.
