Buildings, Not Cars, Emit Higher Levels of Pollution - VIDEO STORY
DETROIT - April 20, 2007: Despite a common misconception, environmentalists say buildings and not vehicles are the primary sources responsible for CO2 emissions. From skyscrapers to family homes, energy experts say buildings emit twice the level of carbon dioxide compared to vehicles. However, to reduce this statistic the Green Building Council now awards gold certificates to individual buildings that meet their global-friendly criteria. One building, an automotive plant in Lansing, MI, meets these guidelines by preserving a 75 acre wildlife site that is located across the street from its facilities. This plant also installed drought-resistant landscaping to eliminate the need for irrigation, and collects rainwater from its roof to be used in flushing the facility's toilets.
