DETROIT--Siemens VDO Gasoline Systems Director Mike Crane will be discussing direct injection gasoline (DIG) innovations at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 2007 World Congress and Exposition in Detroit on Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. during the FEV Powertrain Innovation Forum. In "The Gasoline Engine is Dead. Or is it?" panel, Crane and other industry experts will discuss gasoline alternative strategies to improve fuel economy, reduce emissions, enhance power and extend the gasoline engine life.

Siemens VDO's Piezo-actuated DIG system debuted on the BMW 335i Twin Turbo 3-liter engine giving the customer increased fuel savings throughout an extended engine operating range by facilitating stable lean combustion in stratified operation. Piezo direct injection helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent, while maintaining and in some cases improving performance and drivability.

The company's innovation experts also will present four technical papers at this year's event, three of which address additional powertrain technologies helping to meet impending fuel economy regulations. Siemens VDO's technical paper presentations at the SAE 2007 World Congress include:

  • Optimized Start Strategy for Stop/Start Operation of a u-Hybrid Vehicle Monday, April 16, 2007, Cobo Center Room D3-28 at 11 a.m. during the Advanced Hybrid Vehicle Powertrains (Part 1 of 6) Hybrid Powertrain Controls and In-the-Loop Testing and Calibration session.
  • Experimental and Simulative Investigation on Stratification Potential of Spray-Guided GDI Combustion Systems Wednesday, April 18, 2006, Cobo Center Room O2-33 at 2 p.m. during the Direct Injection SI Engine Technology (Part 1 of 3) session.
  • Integration of a Physical AMESim Engine Model in a Hardware in the Loop Environment, Dedicated to Engine Control Unit Testing Wednesday, April 18, 2007, Cobo Center Room D3-26/27 at 4:15 p.m. during the Modeling of SI and Diesel Engines (Part 6 of 7) Modeling of Engines for Control Applications session.
  • Direct Injection Systems for Otto Engines Thursday, April 19, 2007, Cobo Center Room M2-29 at 1:30 p.m. during the Direct Injection SI Engine Technology (Part 3 of 3) session.
