Freescale’s Symphony™ Class D Amplifier Named EDN Innovation of the Year

AUSTIN, Texas--The Symphony Class D digital amplifier from Freescale Semiconductor was awarded Innovation of the Year in the Analog ICs category by EDN Magazine at a ceremony Monday night in San Jose, Calif.

The annual awards event recognizes engineering excellence among unique, state-of-the-art electronics products in 17 major categories. Electronics industry professionals nominate innovative products and individuals and EDNs editors choose the finalists. This years nominated products must have been introduced and commercially marketed between Jan. 1, 2006 and Dec. 31, 2006. Votes cast by EDN readers via online ballot determined the winners.

Freescales Symphony Class D digital amplifier with its innovative digital feedback technology is a real breakthrough, enabling OEMs to deliver rich, high-fidelity audio in a dramatically smaller form factor while improving power efficiency from 50 to 90 percent, said Berardino Baratta, general manager of the Multimedia Applications Division of Freescale. It is very gratifying that EDN recognized our exceptional engineering achievements in the amplifier chipset with their highest industry honor."

Introduced at the Freescale Technology Forum last July, the Symphony Class D digital amplifier features an innovative digital feedback technology that brings audio performance of Class D amplifiers to a previously unattainable level. This Class D product extends Freescales broad Symphony portfolio of semiconductors for audio applications, giving developers a comprehensive, digital audio solution. Design engineers can take advantage of the tremendous power efficiency improvements and cost savings associated with Class D technology while achieving the superb audio quality that consumers demand.
