Team Mopar Pro Stock Houston qualifying report
Richie Stevens Jr. qualified the Team Mopar/Valspar Dodge Stratus R/T No. 6
after two of four qualifying rounds. The final two sessions were cancelled
because of rain at the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals.
Stevens posted a 6.707-second elapsed time at 206.35 mph in the first
session, which placed him ninth, then improved in the second session with a
6.688/206.32, moving him into sixth.
"We qualified, we're in the No. 6 slot, in the top half," said Stevens.
"Allen's No. 3, so we're both in the top half of the field, which means we
have lane choice, which is definitely a plus here this weekend. I have Jim
Yates first round. He's going to be tough. He's qualified 12th.
"We ran two good runs yesterday. The right lane seemed to be a little better
than the left and we made our best run over there, so we'll probably go over
there tomorrow. But tomorrow's going to be a whole different deal. The race
track has been cleaned off because of the rain and it's going to be a whole
new racing surface for us. We'll go out there tomorrow and watch a couple of
them go down and hopefully choose the right lane and get a couple of wins."
ALLEN JOHNSON, J&J RACING DODGE STRATUS R/T:
Allen Johnson, driving the J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T, qualified No. 3 for
the O'Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals in only two of four schedule qualifying
sessions. The final two were cancelled because of rain.
Johnson was encouraged by the team's testing results the previous weeks.
"Yeah, I think we got the cars where they're consistent again and all the
testing and hard work we've done over the last two or three weeks I think
has finally paid off.
"In the last run we both made really, really good runs. We were at the top
of the sheet at the 330-ft. mark. You can't hardly get any better than
that."
Johnson faces Erica Enders in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday.
