General Motors Corp. is hosting the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan Racing Team for a demonstration of a self-driving Chevrolet Tahoe, the team's entry in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) 2007 Urban Challenge competition.
The challenge involves an unmanned vehicle safely navigating through a 60- mile urban course with merging traffic, stop signs and busy intersections, in less than six hours, without any remote control by humans. The race will be held November 3, 2007 at a location still to be announced in the western United States.
In addition to its premier sponsorship of the team, GM is working with Carnegie Mellon University on autonomous driving technologies through its collaborative research laboratory at the university in Pittsburgh.
