FINAL WINNERS CROWNED AT NO PROBLEM
BELLE ROSE, La. - Racing resumed Monday morning with the
final champions being crowned for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series
Cajun Challenge at No Problem Raceway. Scott Benham of La Grange, Texas,
lead the way in Comp Eliminator with a win over Richard Freemen running
8.377 seconds in his '05 Sunfire.
In Super Stock it was Jerry Emmons taking the win in his
third final round in two races. The Texas racer took out Ryan Baudoin of
Breaux Bridge, La., for his second win of the year in Super Stock. He
won last month at Houston Raceway Park where he was also the runner-up
in Stock Eliminator. Brother Terry took the honors in Stock this weekend
holding off local racer Jimmy Hidalgo of Donaldsonville, La. Terry ran
his '69 Chevelle to a mark of 11.445 seconds at 109.03 mph. Jerry and
Terry are bothers to Gary who also races; and yes they are triplets.
Louisiana racers Tony Giambrone II and Pat Rauch also
visited the winner's circle. Giambrone of Metairie, La., took out Robert
Cool of LaPlace, La., in the final of TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster with a
pass of 7.617 seconds at 167.26 mph while Lafayette, La., resident Rauch
beat Wes Neely in the Super Gas final.
Kurt Damron out of Florida took the win in Super Comp over
Tommy Costales while three Texas racers rounded out the winners. Mark
Buehring of Houston won over Chris Gulitti in the Reher-Morrison Top
Sportsman class; Dan Dittmer of Venus, Texas, drove his '63 Falcon to
victory over Kevin Henry; and Houston racer Mike McCullah outran Henry
Keele in the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson class.
Prior to Sunday's action being stopped due to cold weather,
rookie Top Alcohol Dragster driver Lindsey Wood and veteran alcohol
funny car pilot Jay Payne picked up wins. Wood, driving for the Darien &
Meadows Top Alcohol Dragster Team, captured her first win of her career
as she knocked off South Central Division Champion Spencer Massey in the
final round with a career best 5.291 second pass at 257.04 mph.
Payne, of Claremont, Calif., picked up his third win of the 2007 season
taking out number one qualifier Steve Harker in the funny car final.
Payne's 5.602 second lap at 255.82 was enough to hold off Harker's 5.636
second, 257.04 mph run. Payne won the season opening CarQuest NHRA
Winternationals in Pomona, Calif., then won last week at Gainesville
Raceway for the Lucas Oil Series Southeast Divisional event.
The South Central Division racers head to Memphis
Motorsports Park for their next event March 23-25.
