MASSEY, HARKER LEAD LUCAS OIL SERIES QUALIFIERS AT HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK

BAYTOWN, Texas - In the first rounds of qualifying at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Houston Raceway Park, Spencer Massey was the top qualifier in Top Alcohol Dragster and Steve Harker took the No. 1 qualifying spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car. Today was the first of two days of qualifying and time trials for the event which will conclude with eliminations on Sunday.

Massey, the reigning division champion out of Ft. Worth, Texas, outran the field with a 5.406-second run at 251.16 mph. Houston's Vitali Kazakevich qualified in the No. 3 spot and Morgan Lucas of Brownsburg, Ind., is sixth. Lucas is doing double duty this season, campaigning his Top Alcohol Dragster in NHRA's Lucas Oil Series as well as a Top Fuel Dragster in the PowerAde professional series.

Gainesville, Ga., resident Harker made a 5.769-second, 232.47 mph run to take the top the field. Jimmy Jones, the pharmacist from Cleburne, Texas, was the second place qualifier.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Lee Sharp, Louisville, Tenn., in Comp Eliminator; Robin Brown, Madisonville, Ky., in Super Stock; and Thomas Moock, Eagle, Neb., in Stock Eliminator. Allen Firestone, Velma, Okla., was No. 1 in Top Sportsman, and Top Dragster top qualifier wasJoey Marcotte, Denham Springs, La.

Racing at Houston Raceway Park continues Saturday and Sunday. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Qualifying and time trials resume at 9 a.m. Saturday and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying sessions, at 2 and 5 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday morning at 9 and Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $18 Saturday and $22 on Sunday. Children 6 to 12 years old are $10 Saturday and $12 Sunday. Kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
