GOTHENBURG - January 29, 2007: New studies indicate numerous distractions like cell phones and vehicle passengers put teen drivers at greater risk for fatal car crashes. However, some auto manufacturers like Volvo Cars say they have developed numerous safety systems to help combat this statistic. Using a camera installed on the windscreen to measure the distance between the car and the markings on the road surface, the ‘Driver Alert’ feature gives an audio warning if the car appears to be losing control. To prevent drunk driving, the ‘multi lock system’ forces the driver to blow into a built-in breathalyzer before the car engine will start. In addition, a special ignition key limits the car’s speed to ensure further safety. While the ‘Collision Warning System’ slows the vehicle down if the driver does not hit the brakes when needed, the ‘City Safety system’ will automatically enforce the vehicles brakes to help drivers avoid or minimize damage from low-speed, rear-impact collisions.
