Young driver starts the season with two wins in ICC
January 16, 2007 – Stouffville, ON – The 2007 kart racing season got off to a fantastic start for Cameron Motorsports/CRG driver Mike Vincec as he would come away from the first round of the Florida Winter Tour with a pole position, two wins and fastest laps in both races. Right from the start of Friday practice at the Homestead-Miami Speedway course in Homestead, Florida, 15-year old Vincec never had his SwedeTech-powered CRG out of the top three through the entire weekend.
“What a great way to start the year?? exclaimed Mike after the final on Sunday. “It was great to get back into the kart and work with Brian (Bettencourt). These are the kinds of results you hope for to get a season in motion.??
Arriving on Thursday to join up with the Cameron Motorsports crew which had been in town for the Group ‘A’ races the previous weekend, Mike spent the afternoon testing setups. Timed practices started on Friday afternoon and after some initial changes, Mike was third-fastest on the day. Adjustments made overnight and with the help of some rubber down on the track, Mike would top the charts in morning session on Saturday posting a 45.879. He would improve his time by a tenth and qualify on the outside of row one for the pre-final. A battle into the first turn would shuffle Mike back to P3 where he stayed, putting him on row 2 for Saturday’s final.
With a clean start, Mike was patient through the first few corners but could see opportunity in front of him and by lap three had passed for the lead. He would stay there through the remaining 17 laps and record his first win of the season with a margin of 0.896 seconds.
Confidence was high on Sunday morning even though overnight rains would make the track ‘green’ slowing lap times considerably. Despite that, Mike would post the second fastest time in the morning warm-up, just seventeen-hundredths back. With rubber down in time for qualifying, Mike would post a 46-second lap to take pole for the pre-final.
Mike took off from the green and never looked back recording the victory with a 1.189 second margin. “Our lap times were still a bit slower than Saturday?? noted Mike. “There was not as much grip and toward the end of the race, I had to think ‘tire management’ to make sure we would be in good shape through the final.??
With a clear track in front of him for the final, Mike would get a great launch at the start and pull out a relatively comfortable margin from second place and bring home his second win of the weekend. “You are never out of danger at these races?? said Mike, and you can never count out the guys behind you. If they get close, they will get you, but Brian found just the right setup for us this weekend and it is great to come away with two wins for the team.??
The next Group ‘B’ race in the Florida Winter Tour takes place February 16-18 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway course. The drivers will face a modified layout for this event.
Mike extends his thanks to his sponsors who are on board for 2007 - Cameron Motorsports/CRG, SwedeTech Racing Engines, Sparco/QTM, Inc., TXM Racing Engines, The Decal Zone and Level Ten Communications.
