Telit Communications Gains PTCRB Certification for Additional m2m Technology

RALEIGH, N.C.--Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based m2m mobile technology arm of Telit Communications (AIM: TCM), today announced that its GE863-QUAD module has been awarded PTCRB (PCS Type Certification Review Board) certification. PTCRB certification is a regulatory requirement needed in order to sell GSM cellular communication products in the North American market. This is Telits fourth module to receive PTCRB certification in North America.

The GE863-QUAD is a quad-band enabled module. Since it can be used in the frequency ranges from 824 MHz to 1900 MHz, it can be used anywhere in the world and is thus ideally suited for the American market. The module, which measures just 41.1 x 31.4 x 3.6 mm and weighs just 9 grams, is also extremely sturdy: it can withstand extreme temperatures from -30 °C to + 80 °C. The GE863-QUAD is equipped with the unique Ball Grid Array (BGA) assembly concept.

Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc. develops, produces and markets GSM/GPRS modules and solutions for machine-to-machine (m2m) communication. Their technology provides the basis for machines, equipment or vehicles to interface with each other via mobile communications networks. With its low profile design and extended temperature range, the GE863-QUAD is the perfect platform for all compact, medium and high-volume m2m applications and capable of incorporating additional features like Jamming Detection, integrated TCP/IP protocol stack, and Easy Scan functionality.

BGA is based on tiny solder balls placed on the underside of a module which allows for direct mounting to the application circuit board, without the need for plugs, cables, or connectors. The module can now be assembled using an automated pick-and-place assembly for standard SMD components. This not only reduces material costs, but also installation time and assembly costs. The board-to-board BGA mounting is extremely stable and reliable. Together, the compact shape and reduced assembly costs are crucial advantages for use in cost-sensitive applications, such as those for the consumer market.

This second certification is further proof that our modules are capable of meeting the strictest standards in the industry," said Roger Dewey, President and CEO of Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc. This is just the next step for Telit Wireless Solutions as we look to bring our technology to the rapidly growing US m2m market.

This seal of approval from the CTIA industry association ensures that the GE-863 Quad satisfies the requirements of the American GSM/GPRS network standard. To receive certification, devices must exhibit US-specific features such as Adaptive Multi Rate (AMR) and 850/1900 MHz frequency bands. Testing is carried out by an accredited testing lab.

There are at least ten times more machines, equipment, vehicles and robots than there are humans in the world, creating a critical need to transfer information efficiently between machines or from machines to humans. The relatively new m2m industry delivers increased efficiency, time savings, improved customer orientation and greater flexibility.
