Freescale Lands Two of EDN's 'Hot 100 Products of 2006'
AUSTIN, Texas--Two innovative products from Freescale Semiconductor have won recognition in EDN magazine’s list of Hot 100 Products of 2006. Freescale’s MC34703 QUICCsupply 3 power management device made the list in the power products category, and EDN chose the MSC8144 digital signal processor (DSP) based on StarCore™ technology in the processor category.
EDN's staff of technical editors reviewed the industry's 2006 product introductions and selected the Freescale offerings from hundreds of newsworthy items that graced the pages of EDN, whether they appeared in EDN’s New Products section, a feature story or an online exclusive. The best 100 products of 2006 encompass a variety of architectures and technologies across a wide range of categories – from analog ICs to multimedia to test-and-measurement tools.
"We're honored to receive this recognition from EDN," said Arman Naghavi, vice president and general manager of Freescale's Analog, Mixed-Signal and Power Division. "Making EDN’s Hot 100 Products list is another proof point that our QUICCsupply portfolio offers a compelling power management solution for the communications and networking industry.”
The MC34703 QUICCsupply 3 device provides a single-chip 10A power supply for Freescale's PowerQUICC™ III communications processors. It is designed to complement these and other communications processors with advanced power management features that simplify the design effort and significantly reduce external components and printed circuit board space. The MC34703 integrates multiple system power functions into a single small-footprint package, making it an all-in-one, plug-and-play solution.
“The EDN recognition is the latest in a growing list of accolades generated by the introduction of the MSC8144 DSP,” said Jeff Timbs, director of marketing for Freescale’s Digital Systems Division. “StarCore DSP technology from Freescale is a driving force behind some of the most sophisticated, flexible and powerful digital signal processing devices in the industry, and this latest honor underscores this fact.”
The MSC8144 takes single-chip DSP integration to a higher level of sophistication. Combining four StarCore DSP cores at up to 1GHz each, the device is designed to deliver industry-leading Gigahertz performance, equivalent to a 4GHz single-core DSP. Additionally, it integrates one of the industry's largest embedded memories (at 10.5Mbytes) in a single package, virtually eliminating the need to attach external memories while maintaining a highly competitive cost and power per channel.
"EDN editors cover an amazingly broad technology base and see compelling products across the spectrum throughout the year,” said Maury Wright, EDN’s editor in chief. “The Hot 100 highlights the best of the products from our feature and new-product articles and web coverage over the course of the year. From components to processors to test instruments, each of these 100 stands out in the crowd.”
