Xilinx Announces Record Growth in Consumer and Automotive Segments

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8, 2007 -- At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, Xilinx, Inc. , the world's leading programmable logic device (PLD) provider, announced record traction in the consumer and automotive segments with 40 percent growth in calendar year 2006. The company attributes its phenomenal success in these highly competitive markets to broad customer adoption of its Spartan(TM) FPGAs, CoolRunner(TM) CPLDs, and Xilinx Automotive (XA) product lines in high volume applications.

Xilinx began its market diversification efforts in the late Nineties, when over 80 percent of PLD revenues were generated from the communications sector. Xilinx set its sights on the consumer market with the introduction of its Spartan Generation FPGAs (1998) and CoolRunner CPLDs (1999). In 2004, Xilinx aggressively pursued the automotive market with the introduction of its XA line, the industry's first PLD line specifically developed to meet the stringent requirements of the automotive industry. Today, Xilinx high volume products represent 35 percent of the company's overall revenues.

"As advanced process technology continues to drive down cost of PLDs, we are becoming more and more competitive in high volume consumer applications, especially in digital displays and consumer handsets. Last quarter we shipped over one million devices in a single month to one of our top handset manufacturers," said Wim Roelandts, Chairman and CEO of Xilinx. "The same is true with the automotive segment, where we have 18 devices enabling the infotainment and driver assistance in a single vehicle."

Industry Drives Future Need for Programmability

Industry analysts project further growth for the PLD industry in both the consumer electronics and automotive markets. New requirements across the consumer and automotive electronic industry are also forcing the need for flexible architectures that can cope with not only current applications but future and possible unknown features. According to iSuppli, the market for PLDs and ASICs in consumer electronics will grow to over $5.3B by 2010.

Xilinx PLDS On the Go and On the Road

Today, Xilinx commands 52 percent market share and its PLDs can be found in a variety of consumer electronic and automotive applications, including digital displays, mobile phones, PDAs, rear-seat entertainment and satellite navigation systems. Xilinx solutions for consumer and automotive applications are on display at this week's CES, January 8 -11, Booth #35580, South Hall, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
