INTERMET Announces Safety Milestone

FORT WORTH, TEXAS, Jan. 4, 2007 -- Intermet Corporation, one of the world's leading manufacturers of cast-metal automotive components, last week reached a significant milestone for a metal-casting foundry, at its Radford Virginia Plant. Intermet's New River Foundry and its 340 employees passed the two million hours worked mark without a single lost time injury on December 3, 2006, translating into over 800 days of continuous operation without a lost time injury.

Steve Lake, President of Intermet's Ferrous Division, attributes the achievement to total teamwork. "Everyone at the New River Plant takes ownership and has great pride in this achievement. It takes total teamwork from one end of the plant to the other, every employee, making safety an integral part of his or her job each day to reach a goal of 2,000,000 hours."

New River Foundry Safety Manager Jeff Hamley credits employee training and the company safety initiative for accomplishing the two-million hour milestone. "Our new hires go through extensive training as part of their orientation process and our safety program stresses continuous observation and reporting of any potential hazardous conditions in the workplace. This helps to create a safety environment that has really paid off at our plant."

To celebrate this accomplishment, New River Foundry employees will be treated to a catered dinner during all three shifts at the plant.
