DETROIT - December 28, 2006: General Motors has opened a new $10 million rollover crash testing facility in Michigan earlier this month. GM officials say the premise of the facility is to reduce the number of rollover-related injuries and deaths by developing sensors for airbags. An estimated 2 percent of all crashes involve rollovers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. From this 2 percent, an estimated 10,000 people die annually, a number that comprises 40 percent of all automotive crash fatalities a year. Almost 200 crash tests a year are expected to occur at this new facility, which is the first plant of its kind to be owned by an automaker.
