SANDIA MOTORSPORTS PARK INTRODUCES NEW MEXICO FANS TO ASA RACING

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - American Speed Association (December 13, 2006) - Adding another state to the expanding roster of ASA Member Tracks, Sandia Motorsports Park has become the first racetrack in New Mexico to join the organization. With the addition, ASA now has a presence in 22 states with the Member Track and Regional Racing programs.

Sandia Motorsports Park (SMP) is a unique multi-purpose facility located less than 15 miles from downtown Albuquerque. Housed on 86-acres, the list of racetracks includes a half-mile and quarter-mile oval, 1.7-mile road course, Motocross track, Quarter-Midget track and even a paved Remote Control car track.

The regular Saturday night program includes Modifieds, Street Stock, 4-Cylinder, Slug Bugs, Powder Puff and Legends classes.

"The Slug Bugs are really unique to our racetrack," said Chuck Jackson, general manager of Sandia Motorsports Park. "These are VW Beetles in racing trim and they really are a blast to watch. The fans go crazy when they head out of the pits. I think we may be the only racetrack in the country with a Slug Bug class." As the name implies, Slug Bugs were born as 1960 to 1978 VW Beetles. Though certain racing modifications have been allowed (such as the addition of a rear spoiler) and safety modifications and equipment are required, the Slug Bugs are still basically as they came from the factory with 1600 CC air-cooled engines and rear wheel drive.

New to the 2007 schedule are five special drifting events, a form of motorsports which is quickly catching on with the fans. The drift cars will run their practices in the afternoon, then have qualifying and racing during the regular programs with the other racers.

"We are going to introduce our regular race fans to drifting so that they can see what the 'kids' are up to these days," Jackson explained. "Hopefully the 'old timers' who are regulars with our Saturday night programs will get a kick out of the drifting and have something new to look forward to. And on the other hand, we want all the drifting fans to see what oval racing is all about. If we can cross-pollinate the fan base then everyone will have a reason to keep coming back to Sandia Motorsports Park and have some fun."

Other special events in 2007 include visits by the US Late Model Association and four Governor's Cup truck races. This is a program hosted by the New Mexico Sports Authority which features a touring truck series which competes at multiple tracks across the state accumulating points towards the prestigious Governor's Cup.

SMP joined as a Level I participant in the ASA Member Track program which entitles them for contributions to their year-end point fund, marketing assistance, and enhanced participant accident insurance to the competitors.

"I did it for my racers," Jackson said of why he joined the ASA Member Track program. "I wanted to give them some recognition as being part of a national group and not just feel like they are just racing within the track and local community. They can have assistance with the point fund which will help them at the end of the season, and hopefully obtain some national recognition for being part of ASA."

"On a track standpoint, I wanted to be able to take advantage of the group buying power that ASA has. I am looking at the discounted AMB Timing system as an example. The prices that the ASA group offers I could not get as an individual track operator."

"And finally, the insurance package ASA offers is quite attractive. I want to make sure that my racers have the best possible coverage and the ASA insurance is much better than I could obtain on my own. I am really looking forward to working with Dennis (Huth) and using the ASA expertise and experience to make Sandia Motorsports Park the best it possibly can be," Jackson added.
