OSRAM Opto Semiconductors’ LEDs Shine in Daytime Running Lights of Luxury Sports Car

SAN JOSE, Calif.--For the third time, premier design company Pininfarina has opted for light-emitting diode (LED) light sources from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors to illuminate their bold headlight designs. Following the ENJOY show car and the Maserati Birdcage 75th, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors LEDs have now been added to a legendary Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina.

We are delighted with the excellent cooperation with Pininfarina, said Dr. Ruediger Mueller, president and CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The design studies have shown how our LEDs can be used to create such individual solutions and exceptional designs.

The Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina caused quite a stir at the recent Concours dElégance, a beauty pageant for exceptional automobiles, in Pebble Beach, Calif. The designer completely redesigned the car for New York Ferrari collector James Glickenhaus. Pininfarina paid tribute to the incredible love Glickenhaus has for legendary sports cars of the 1960s, while at the same time delivering state-of-the-art technology. Starting out as a Ferrari Enzo, the sports car was transformed into a unique, roadworthy vehicle with a retro race car design.

With its sleek styling, this powerful automobile also looks impressive in daylight. The bold headlights, with daytime running lights that follow the contour of the body, are reminiscent of sharks teeth and give the vehicle an unmistakable look.

Pininfarina used 15 LED clusters to create the daytime running light for each headlight. Each cluster includes 8 Power TOPLEDs® from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. The design company was particularly impressed by the brightness ratio of these light sources in relation to the small amount of space they need. Each LED is equipped with a ThinGaN® chip, providing an efficiency of 40 lm/W. The unusual headlight contour is beautifully emphasized, and the 15 lights are clearly distinguishable, enhancing the decidedly dynamic impression that this automobile gives.

LEDs are now being used more and more as first-choice light sources for unique headlight designs. OSRAM offers LEDs for a wide range of applications including point light sources, for large and small areas, and for light injection, encouraging designers to exploit their full potential.
