Audi Sports’ Winning Le Mans R10 Diesel Engine Developed with PTC® Software Solutions

NEEDHAM, Mass.--PTC , the Product Development Company®, today announced that Audi Sport, the motorsports division of Audi AG, will shortly complete its 11th consecutive year of successful motor sports partnership with PTC. Audi Sport deploys on PTCs Product Development Solution including Pro/ENGINEER®, the CAD/CAM/CAE solution, and Windchill®, the information and process management system to develop its winning race cars for both the German Saloon Masters (DTM) as well as the program with the Sport Prototype including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Windchill PDMLink® has been deployed to capture and manage all product development information to help maximize engineering productivity for the Audi Sport development teams. It also enables collaboration between the Audi Sport team and the Audi brand group as part of their ongoing technology transfer.

In a spectacular achievement, the Audi R10 TDI won both its maiden race at the 2006 12 Hours of Sebring and the 2006 24 Hours of Le Mans. It was the first diesel engine to win either of those events. The Audi R10 sports prototype is a testament to the power of the Product Development System. In only 10 months development time, the Audi Sports engineering department in Neckarsulm, Germany developed and built a revolutionary 12 cylinder diesel engine that excels in both torque and power output. In its first Le Mans participation ever, the R10 TDI not only achieved the fastest lap ever, but also covered a new record distance of 380 rounds in 24 hours.

PTC Pro/ENGINEER has added a lot of value to our development efforts by reducing the development time for our different racing cars for many years now, said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of the sports and special developments division at Audi. As a great example, we were able to realize a complete redevelopment of the A4 DTM in only four and a half months. In a recent re-engineering project to optimize the V8 race engine for the DTM 2006 racing season, Windchill PDMLink proved to be tremendously helpful to better manage our product development data. Providing collaborative access to data and product structures, it allowed the teams to work in parallel and save valuable time in the development process.

Partnering with leading race teams like Audi Sport is a vital element in PTCs strategy to provide leading edge solutions, said Martin Walters, director of automotive product and market strategy, PTC. With the necessity to be on the grid on next Sundays racing event, a product development system needs to be fast, reliable and effective. Working successfully against the extreme time pressures in racing clearly proves that our technology meets the needs of the automotive industry, where shorter product development cycles are day to day business.

From Formula 1 to NASCAR to America's Cup sailing, the world's best performance teams partner with PTC to support their advanced and demanding design, development and manufacturing projects.
