Faas Takes National Focus Opener

Nic Faas of Huntington Beach, Calif. leads the USAC National Ford Focus contingent to Thursday night's championship showdown at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. The race is part of the track's 66th "Turkey Night Grand Prix" activities.

Faas led all 50 laps to win the National Ford Focus opener at Ventura (Calif.) Raceway Saturday night in his Beast. He was followed to the checkered flag by Nick Wean, Bobby Michnowicz, Michael Faccinto and Brett Engstrom.

A 50-lap feature is scheduled on Irwindale's 1/3-mile paved oval and the National Championship will be crowned at race's end, his name to be emblazoned on the Henry Ford Sweepstakes Trophy.

Chris Veach, last year's National Ford Focus runnerup, was Saturday's fastest Ventura qualifier and won the opening heat race. Other heats went to Cameron Veach, Brian Camarillo and Dennis Howell. Wean won the B-main.
