DOUGLAS COUNTY SPEEDWAY FINDS NEW MANAGEMENT, NEW PARTNER WITH ASA MEMBER TRACK PROGRAM

DOUGLAS COUNTY SPEEDWAY FINDS NEW MANAGEMENT, NEW PARTNER WITH ASA MEMBER
TRACK PROGRAM

 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (November 17, 2006) - Douglas County Speedway in
Roseburg, Ore., is looking to the future with both new track management and
a Level I affiliation with the ASA Member Track Program.

 

The 0.375-mile paved oval, situated on the grounds of the Douglas County
Fairgrounds, had been managed for the past several years by the fairgrounds
itself, but they decided that the time was right to leave that to others.
The track was put up to a bid process and from that, Adam and Kelly Nelson
were selected for handing the daily operation and promotion of the
multi-acre facility.

 

"We are really excited about this opportunity," said Adam, DCS
promoter/speedway operations manager. "The thing that really nailed this for
us was that Douglas County Speedway is a top-notch facility and is so much
better than what we have been used to. Racetracks are few and far between,
so to find a nice one that was available, really gave us a reason to pack up
the ship and move to Roseburg. This is easily the premier asphalt track in
the state of Oregon and adding ASA Member Track certainly takes it up
another positive step!"

 

One of the reasons that Adam is so enthusiastic about the track is that it
underwent a $400,000 renovation and facelift only a few years ago. Douglas
County Speedway has covered grandstands with seating for 5,000 and is paved
throughout. The weekly track program features several classes, including
Late Models, Sprint Cars, Modifieds, Street Stock, Mini Stock, J-Cars and
Hornets.

 

If the Nelson name rings a familiar bell, it is because they managed
Chaparral Speedway near Boise, Idaho, for the past three years. Sadly, the
track owner sold the land to a developer leaving the Nelson's looking for a
new opportunity. 

 

"We're excited because things happen for a reason," Adam explained,
mentioning that the family has only been in Oregon for four weeks. "We are
still feeling out the water and getting to know everyone here," he added by
way of explanation.

 

As the son of a short track promoter and former driver, along with years of
experience managing a racetrack, Adam is no stranger to the world of weekly
racing. Though specific plans still need to be outlined, he did mention
several goals he and Kelly have already set for the 2007 season.

 

"One of the things that we are taking a hard look at is to try and adjust
the rule packages to help lower the cost of racing for the competitors.
Hopefully this will work to increase the car count. The car counts have
already been satisfactory, but we always want more for the fans," Adam said
with a laugh.

 

"The other thing that Kelly and I want to do is come up with ways to get the
grandstands more involved with the on-track activities and become more than
just spectators. There are some novelty events we plan on incorporating.
These are really nothing new and have all been used before, just not at
Douglas County Speedway. And like all promoters, we want to increase our fan
base."

 

"I have had several interactions with Adam and Kelly over the past few years
and found them to be quite progressive in their thinking," said Dennis Huth,
president of the ASA Member Track Program. "I saw how they helped turn
Chaparral Speedway from a weed patch into a class facility. It is going to
be interesting to see what they can do with a racetrack that is already
among the best in the Pacific Northwest to start with. Douglas County
Speedway and the Nelson's are both tremendous additions to the ASA Member
Track family and we are fortunate to have them on our team."

 

According to Adam, the decision to join the ASA Member Track program was
simple. While at Chaparral Speedway he booked some of the ASA Regional
Racing tours and had interaction with Huth and other ASA officials and began
to get a feel for what the program offered. In fact, the Nelson's were twice
named the ASA Northwest Sprint Tour "Promoter of the Year," in 2003 and
again in 2005.

 

"Our past dealings with Dennis and ASA certainly planted a seed," said Adam.
"The ASA insurance is top quality - better than we could have obtained by
ourselves - and we needed to provide something like that to our racers and
to the fairgrounds."

 

"But the real clincher was how open Dennis was to customize the program to
fit our needs rather than what was best for the ASA. There were certain
things we needed to change or modify and Dennis was able to make the changes
we asked for without any issues."

 

Tracks and regional touring series that join as Level I members in the ASA
Member Track program are eligible for contributions to their year-end point
fund, marketing assistance, and enhanced participant accident insurance to
the competitors.
