Ferrari Panamerican 20,000 Stops in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH--Alcoa , a sponsor of the Ferrari Pan-Am 20,000 and exclusive supplier of all Ferrari Gran Turisimo aluminum spaceframes, announced today that the Italian automaker’s caravan has stopped in Pittsburgh as part of its 84-day test drive journey of its new, 12-cylinder 599 GTB Fiorano. The Pan-Am 20,000, which began in August in Brazil and will conclude in New York on November 17, has traveled through 16 countries in South, Central and North America.
The tour involves taking two 599 GTB Fiorano cars through various terrains from the mountain roads of the Andes to dirt roads in La Paz and now through the hills of Pittsburgh. It is designed to show the toughness, reliability and performance of the 620 horsepower, two-seat Fiorano, which featured an Alcoa-made aluminum spaceframe.
Alcoa has hosted three stops along the 15-stage tour: Sao Paulo, Brazil, headquarters for Alcoa in Brazil; Rockdale, Texas, home to Alcoa’s largest U.S. smelter; and Pittsburgh, where Alcoa was born.
“As Ferrari’s strategic partner for advanced spaceframe technology, we’re pleased to welcome the tour to Pittsburgh. The 20,000 trek through much of the western hemisphere is a true test of the strength and performance of the 599 and its aluminum chassis structure,” said Misha Riveros-Jacobson, president of Alcoa Auto and Truck Structures, the business that makes the Ferrari spaceframes.
The Ferrari-Alcoa partnership began in 1994. The two companies have collaborated on four successful generations of spaceframes including the 360 Modena, F430 and 612 Scaglietti. Alcoa produces the spaceframes for Ferrari in its newly opened automotive assembly plant located in Modena, Italy.
