MINDY’S SUNNY CALIFORNIA MINUTE
Moorpark, Calif. - (November 7, 2006) After being in Sin City for a week
and a half, I was ready to hit the road for a change. I flew to sunny
California on Saturday afternoon to spend a couple days in the Ringers Gloves home
office in Moorpark (Calif.).
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love Las Vegas and everything about it.
The NHRA race and the SEMA Show both were great events for us, but after
losing money almost every night and not winning one penny, I was ready to bail.
However, I still have to give an extra special “thank you?? again to Brendan
Gaughan, Mike Snow and everyone at South Point Racing for taking care of us at
the South Point Hotel & Casino, even though the South Point was one of the
fine establishments I contributed money to and didn’t get anything back from!
Thanks again you guys!
While I was at the Gaughan-owned casino in Vegas, the Gaughan’s South Point
Racing team and driver Brendan was trying to tame the 1.5-mile oval. Brendan
usually has some pretty good runs at Texas Motor Speedway, after all it is
where he picked up his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win, but this time
around TMS wasn’t so good to him.
Brendan got out of shape on lap 60 and about put himself into the wall. He
was able to save his No. 77 South Point Dodge, but the rest of the race was a
battle for him, fighting an ill-handling ride. After bringing his No. 77
home in 17th, the team discovered the right rear spring popped out of its
place, causing Brendan the problems.
Kyle Busch returned behind the wheel of the Ringers supporting team, the No.
15 Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevrolet, and gave eventual winner Clint Bowyer
quite a run for his money. Within the final two laps of the race, Busch
pulled within 0.279 seconds of Bowyer and that’s where he ended up finishing,
the margin he was behind Bowyer in second place.
The NASCAR Busch Series and the Nextel Cup Series also raced at Texas Motor
Speedway over the weekend. On Saturday, the Busch Series and Ringers
supporting drivers Todd Kluever and Jason Leffler competed in the O’Reilly
Challenge 300.
Kluever was the highest finishing Ringers supporting driver and the highest
finishing rookie of the race. Kluever used his DriverX racing gloves to
pilot his No. 06 Ford Fusion to a 10th-place finish. However, Leffler didn’t
have very good luck on Saturday. Leffler was put out of the race on lap 55
with an expired engine, relegating him to 43rd.
The Ringers team of Penske Racing South and its drivers Kurt Busch and Ryan
Newman had night and day runs throughout the Dickies 500 on Sunday
afternoon.
Newman went a lap down early in the race and never gained it back, crossing
the line in 34th. On the other hand, Busch took his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge
to the front of the field for 37 laps and brought his hot rod home in eighth
place.
Only two races remain in all the elite divisions of the NASCAR series,
Phoenix this weekend and Miami-Homestead the following.
With the National Sprint Tour (NST) season over, Ringers racer Tim Kaeding
ventured to his home state of California to run the 13th annual Trophy Cup at
Tulare Thunderbowl in Tulare, Calif. TK captured the win on the first night
and finished second on the final night to clinch his second Trophy Cup title
and sixth for the Kaeding family.
His brother Bud also raced over the weekend at the Budweiser Oval Nationals
at Perris Auto Speedway in Lake Perris, Calif. BK finished 12th on the
first night and 10th on the second night in USAC National & USAC/CRA sprint
action. BK is a former Oval Nationals winner.
That’s it for this week! I am headed to Pomona tomorrow night for the NHRA
finale of the season at the Auto Club Raceway at Pomona before I head back
to Indianapolis to recoup for the 2007 season.
