AKRON, Ohio--News From USW:
Media Advisory -- Photo & interview opportunities -- WHO: Former Vice Presidential Candidate and U.S. Senator John Edwards (NC); United Steelworkers president Leo W. Gerard; Ohio AFL-CIO president Bill Burga; USW Ohio Director David McCall; U.S. Congressional candidate Betty Sutton; striking USW members; USW and former United Rubber Workers (URW) retirees; family and community members. WHAT: A rally to protest Goodyear's refusal to negotiate a fair and equitable contract with 15,000 USW-represented workers at 16 plants. WHEN: 2 p.m., Saturday, November 4, 2006 WHERE: USW Local 2 Hall 501 Kelly Avenue Akron, OH 44306 (Across the street from Joy Park) WHY: In the 2003 contracts with Goodyear, the USW worked very innovatively to help save the company. The union workers accepted wage, pension and health care cuts and allowed the closing of the Huntsville, Ala. plant. Also, the union worked with local management in programs at each plant to increase productivity and production efficiencies. While all other stakeholders have benefited from the company's turnaround, Goodyear insists on additional plant closings and other major concessions from its workers. Goodyear also looks to walk away from retiree health care obligations and wants to move more production offshore. Photo and interview opportunities available
