SCELZI NAILS DOWN NO. 9 IN VEGAS QUALIFYING
LAS VEGAS (Oct. 28, 2006) - Reigning NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series Funny
Car champion Gary Scelzi raced to No. 9 in qualifying for the ACDelco Las
Vegas NHRA Nationals, recording his quickest pass of 4.746 seconds at 320.05
mph in the excellent Friday night conditions at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway.
His other laps in the Mopar/Oakley Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car included a
tire-smoking 10.156/80.50, a 7.337/111.18, and finally another stout pass in
the final qualifying session of 4.768/328.30.
"It's not bad," said Scelzi, winner here in 2004. "We're still trying to
sort some clutch issues out, but we think we can go down the track tomorrow,
and we think we can run mid-4.70s. I think that's what it's going to take.
Mid to high-.70s should win this race tomorrow. If we can do that four times
and I'm on the gas on the starting line, we could have a little reunion
here, and that would be a great thing to have.
"We're excited about it," he continued. "We have Tony Pedregon (first round
of eliminations). He made a good run, but there ain't nobody out here we
can't run with. We just have to get the right knob in the right spot, and
hopefully we'll get enough chances to do that tomorrow and make some noise."
