BimmerWorld Wraps Up The ’06 Season Moving To The Front
After a long season of new-car development challenges, the
BimmerWorld team wrapped up the season with an outstanding weekend at
the SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car finale at Mazda
Raceway Laguna Seca.
Leading the team with a 7th place finish was Seth Thomas driving the
#38 BimmerWorld Performance Friction BMW 325i.
“This was a great way to end the season,?? remarked Seth. “I had
a run in with the turn 4 wall earlier in the week,?? noted Seth.
“The damage was only slight to the suspension and the guys were able
to get it back together in short order. I learned quickly that turn 4
required a little more than just a “lift?? to stay out of the dirt.
After that, the car was good all weekend.??
“I wanted to be sure we qualified the car solid,?? Seth
continued. “James and I went out by ourselves to set our own pace.
We have found out all year there really is only one good lap in the
tires. That was definitely true this weekend. I had one lap to lay
down the best lap I could... and I did. 11th was the 2nd best
qualifying result I have had in the E90.??
“In the race, I didn’t get the best start and fell back a couple
of spots,?? noted Seth. “The car was what helped me to gain them
back as it was fast right out of the box. I was able to drive it very
consistently all race and as fast or faster than my qualifying
times. I think this was the best race I’ve had in the E90.??
“I think It is great that we finished off the year on a good
note,?? said Thomas. “We know the car will be competitive next
year. We definitely have work to do in the off season but we are
looking forward to putting BMW back on top of the Touring car ranks
next year.??
BimmerWorld owner and driver of the #36 BimmerWorld Performance
Friction BMW 325i, James Clay, concurred with Seth’s observations
and conclusions of the race and the team’s season.
“I was very happy with the result from Laguna,?? said a somewhat
relieved Clay. “Seth and I went out with nothing to lose this race
and the new E90 cars performed quite well. I think we worked out the
magic setup on this newly surfaced track and Seth pulled some very
fast laps in the race after an excellent qualifying effort. During
the race he set the fourth fastest lap overall.??
“My weekend was going very well until qualifying,?? James
recalled. “I bent a wheel on the outlap after tapping one of the new
Apex bubbles on the newly resurfaced track. That sent me back to the
pits for a new tire and back out in less than optimum conditions.??
“In the end, I had a good race and the car was very solid,?? said
James looking rather pleased. “We’ll take the positive results
into the off season and get ready for 2007.??
Tomy Drissi, driving the #39 BimmerWorld BMW 325i had a bit of bad
luck at the start of the race in his Ergon/21st Century Fox car. An
axle popped in the warmup lap, foiling what was shaping up to be a
promising race from the seasoned veteran.
In conclusion of a tough season, Clay was notably upbeat about 2007.
“I was happy to finish up the season on a positive note,?? said
Clay. “We are working with the SCCA technical staff on the current
deficiencies of the E90 cars and we have what I think are fair and
reasonable solutions on the table that should put these cars right
where they belong in 2007 – battling for a championship.??
