Lester Buildings driver returns to site of first Busch race
After winning the 1999 ASA (American Speed Association) Championship,
Tim Sauter had his sights set on NASCAR. He finally got his break in
October of 2000 when Steve Coulter asked Tim to drive for his upstart
team at the Sam’s Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports Park. Sauter
started 24th and finished one lap down to Kevin Harvick in 29th place
in his Busch Series debut.
In addition to his first NASCAR start, Tim’s NASCAR career best also
came at the ¾ mile tri-oval not far from the home of Elvis on October
20th, 2002 when he finished sixth behind fellow Wisconsinite Scott
Wimmer driving the AP Performance/St Jude’s Research Hospital Chevy.
Sauter is hoping this past success will carry over to Saturday’s event.
This will be the last race for Lester Buildings as the primary
sponsor of the McGill Motorsports #36. It’s been a long year for the
independent team competing against larger multi-car teams with Nextel
Cup support and resources. “The competition level in this series is
the highest it’s ever been,” explained Sauter. “With the number of
Cup teams and drivers using the Busch Series for a practice session,
a lot of the independent teams have been pushed right out of the
sport, this team should be proud to survive. I’d like to finish with
a strong run for Lester Buildings and the McGill team this weekend.”
There are 50 entries on the preliminary entry list for the Sam’s Town
250. Twenty-one drivers are attempting the “double-duty” of both the
Busch and Cup races this weekend.
Qualifying for the Sam’s Town 250 is at 11:00 am eastern on Saturday,
October 28th. The green flag will fly at 2:00 pm eastern the same
day. The race can be seen live on NBC and will be broadcast on MRN
radio stations across the country.
• The Sam’s Town 250 will be Tim’s 111th start in the NBS and 116th
career NASCAR start.
• Tim is currently 27th in NBS driver points.
• All three Sauter brothers will be attempting this weekends Sam’s
Town 250.
• This will be the sixth time Tim has competed at Memphis in the NBS.
Best Finish; 6th on October 20th, 2002 driving the AP Performance/St
Judes Research Hospital Chevy.
Tim’s thoughts on the Memphis Speedway: “This is a great little track
to drive. The last two years we had good runs going here and both
ended in wrecks. You really need a lot of brakes, especially going
into turn three it’s one of the tightest corners we see all year.”
• This will be the third time McGill Motorsports has competed at
Memphis in the NBS. Best Finish; 21st on October 23rd, 2004 with
Travis Geisler driving.
