Mobile Digital TV Alliance Applauds Publication of TIA-1105, Making DVB-H a Formal Standard for US Market

SAN RAMON, Calif.--The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has adopted the first official open standard for mobile digital video broadcasting. The publication of TIA-1105, or Terrestrial Mobile Multimedia Multicast based on Digital Video Broadcasting for Handheld Devices (DVB-H) System gives official recognition to the specification and application of the global DVB-H standard in the United States. This is an important step toward broad adoption of the standard in the USA. The TIA is a major contributor of open industry standards that support global trade and commerce in communications products and systems.

"The Alliance applauds TIA's open, fair and transparent standards process and commends the adoption of the DVB-H specification in the form of TIA standard TIA-1105," said Yoram Solomon, President of the Mobile DTV Alliance (MDTVA) and Senior Director of Strategic Marketing and Industry Relations for Mobile Connectivity Solutions, Texas Instruments. “The Alliance believes that DVB-H is the optimal mobile digital television solution and will naturally prevail as the global standard of choice. It is currently the most widely deployed mobile DTV standard worldwide, and we expect 500 million mobile users will have access to DVB-H by 2010."

DVB-H is the mobile DTV standard that delivers premium-quality digital broadcast television to mobile devices and automobile infotainment systems, and is the global open-procedure standard of choice. It is supported by more than 100 companies worldwide, representing multiple options for the different links in the value chain. As an open standard, it promotes competition and enables economies of scale that will eventually benefit operators and consumers alike. In addition, it fosters cooperation with other organizations such as ETSI, TIA, DVB Project, and bmcoforum.

MDTVA recently approved the group’s first set of implementation guidelines -- intended to facilitate interoperability among the many mobile digital TV solutions. These will assist operators, device manufacturers, and others across the industry with the implementation of DVB-H as a standard for mobile digital TV in North America. This will help promote the adoption rate of DVB-H in North America as now operators and others in the market will have the necessary interoperable components to reliably implement an application based on DVB-H.
