Kinnelon School District Installs GPS Tracking Devices in School Buses

Leading GPS Technology Offers Enhanced Safety, Theft Protection

KINNELON, N.J., Oct. 18 -- The Kinnelon School District today announced that it has installed Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) devices as a pilot program in two of the district's new school buses to enhance the safety of children riding in the buses and guard against theft.

The buses, the first purchased by the Morris County, NJ, K-12 school district, now are equipped with Millennium Plus from MyGPSProtection, a state- of-the-art GPS technology that combines cellular mobile phone technology with GPS to track and pinpoint the location of vehicles.

The small Millennium Plus units, installed in the buses, constantly transmit location and performance data over a wireless network to a Web-based application that analyzes the data and posts the results on a secure website.

"Thanks to advanced GPS technology, we now have one more tool to protect our children as they travel to and from school," said Kinnelon Superintendent of Schools James J. Opiekun. "Using computers in the district office or from any location, we can access the secure website and pinpoint the locations of school buses in seconds. We can actually see satellite photos and road maps allowing us to respond to emergencies and optimize the operation of our buses. For example, a disabled school bus can be tracked in real time allowing us to dispatch help to its exact location."

The system also allows administrators to set location and speed limits and to receive alarms if a school bus travels outside of a predetermined area or exceeds a speed limit. In the event a vehicle is stolen, the school district can immediately issue an email or make a cell phone call to disable the bus' starter.

The wallet-sized devices were donated to the school district by Kinnelon resident Jon Horovitz, owner of MyGPSProtection, a nationally authorized distributor of the Millennium Plus system. The monthly monitoring fee of $19.95 per month per bus will be paid by the school district.

"As a parent, I know nothing is more important than the safety of our children -- particularly when they are on school buses," said Horovitz. "In addition, protecting the district's valuable assets, such as school buses, from theft benefits all residents. I am pleased to see this technology put to work for our town."

The only tracking device that offers satellite photos of a vehicle's location in seconds, the Millennium Plus Mobile Location Unit installs on all vehicle types, integrates with existing alarm systems and, because it relies on the worldwide constellation of satellites, is available throughout the US and around the globe.

Horovitz said the Millennium Plus system is an affordable option for anyone interested in tracking valuable assets and loved ones. For parents seeking to enhance the safety of teenaged drivers to business people interested in fleet management, the system offers peace of mind and security.
