Nationwide Arrival of Clean Diesel Fuel Means Cleaner Air, More Fuel Efficient Vehicles
Clean Diesel Rolls Out This Weekend
Federally Mandated New Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (ULSD) Arrives at Filling Stations All Across America This Weekend
NEW YORK, Oct. 14 -- The arrival of ULSD is an environmental achievement as important as removing lead from gasoline a generation ago. ULSD is 97 percent cleaner than old diesel fuel, and will be the catalyst for a new generation of clean heavy-duty trucks arriving in January, as well as new clean diesel passenger cars being offered to consumers within the next several model years. New clean diesel fuel is the great enabler of the total transformation of diesel cars, trucks, buses, off-road equipment and cargo ships. Clean diesel means cleaner air for all Americans, and its superior fuel efficiency also reduces carbon dioxide emissions.
Commercial freight-hauling diesel trucks, which deliver 94 percent of consumer products to store shelves, will be the first adopters of this new technology. Beginning on January 1st, 2007, those new trucks' engines will have state-of-the-art emissions filters in place so technologically advanced that they will only be able to run on the new clean fuel. The new filters, which act as self-cleaning ovens, will capture and eliminate harmful emissions. The clean fuel, coupled with the new filters on every new truck, will work in concert to ensure that all new diesel rigs pass the "white handkerchief test," eliminating 98 percent of emissions and any hint of the smoke associated with diesels of the past.
