RAIN DATE: October 13-16, 2006*
*Qualifying:
Session 1 Friday: 6.602 seconds at 209.26 mph (#2)
Session 2 Friday: 12.657 seconds at 68.23 mph (#2)*
*Line runs fastest speed in NHRA Pro Stock history,
No. 2 after first day of qualifying *
DINWIDDIE, Va. (October 5, 2006) -- Jason Line, driver of the KB Racing
LLC-owned, Summit Racing Equipment-backed Pontiac GTO, returned to
Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) as qualifying got underway today for the
Inaugural NHRA Torco Racing Fuels Nationals which was postponed from
last weekend to this weekend due to persistent rain.
This is the first time the NHRA has raced here at Virginia Motorsports
Park since 2000.
For Line, who set a national elapsed time of 6.609 seconds at the last
race in Reading, PA., the extra week proved beneficial as he covered the
VMP quarter-mile in 6.602 seconds at 209.26 mph in today's first
qualifying session.
This would have lowered his previous E.T. record but Line found that his
teammate Greg Anderson, who was in the lane opposite Line, had gone
quicker, running the quickest elapsed time in NHRA history, a 6.598
second pass. The consolation for Line was that his speed of 209.26 mph
was the fastest speed in NHRA history.
In the second qualifying outing today, Line was out to reclaim the E.T.
record but shook the tires and had to shut off.
"We were definitely swinging for the fences in the second session and we
just missed," said Line. "We were going for a 6.58 or 6.57 and just
didn't get it, but I definitely think it's out there so we'll try again
tomorrow."
From Anderson's low elapsed time of 4.598 seconds to the No. 16 spot
anchored by Virginian Jim Yates' 6.658, the Pro Stock class has set its
quickest field ever for the second race in a row. Line finished the
first day of qualifying No. 2 on the Pro Stock ladder. Two qualifying
sessions remain tomorrow, scheduled for noon and 2:30 p.m.
With only three races remaining on the 2006 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series schedule, including this event, Line continues to lead the NHRA
POWERade Pro Stock point standings with 1,453 points. Anderson, in
second, has pulled to within 56 points of his teammate. Dave Connolly
is third, 183 points behind Line and 127 behind Anderson.
ESPN2 / ESPN2 HD will air qualifying highlights for the Inaugural NHRA
Torco Nationals and same-day television coverage of eliminations on
Sunday, Oct. 15 from 7 until 9:30 p.m. Also, tune in to NHRA2Day on
