Refueling Can Cause Static Fires, Experts Offer Safety Tips -
VIDEO NEWS STORY
EDITOR'S NOTE: I think this is a bullshit story. After nearly 40 years of putting gas in
vehicles I've never seen or heard of this happening to anyone. But I guess someone at API had
some extra money in their budget and they didn't want to lose it, so they commissioned the production
of this videotape. Well, maybe I'm wrong and it is an important subject. Give it a look-see, it couldn't
hurt, and perhaps it will save your life.

WASHINGTON, DC - October 10, 2006: As National Fire Prevention Week begins Oct. 9, the
American Petroleum Institute (API) is advising motorists to take extra
precautions when refueling their vehicles. API officials say to avoid
static fires and other related accidents when pumping gas, drivers should
turn off their vehicles, avoid smoking and remain outside of the car.
However, should a consumer enter their vehicle during the refueling
process, they should discharge any static build up by touching something
metal with their bare hand (such as a car door) before reaching for the
nozzle.
