ABOLD STARS IN NORTHEAST FINALE; SMITH SEWS UP 2ND TITLE

Jeff Abold became the latest winner in USAC Northeast Ford Focus Midget Car Series competition over the weekend, while Ryan Smith became the first driver ever to win two USAC Ford Focus championships in the same season.

Abold, of Oswego, N.Y., led all 25 laps of the "D. Anthony Venditti Memorial" race Sunday at Seekonk (Mass.) Speedway, besting Jesse State, Nick Wean, Ryan Osborne and Dana Messier.

Messier and Jon Seaman won eight-lap heats, which were contested Saturday.

Smith, of Kunkletown, Pa., needed only to start the feature, and was credited with 13th in the feature. Even so, he claimed the title by just 27 points over Abold, winning the championship after taking three victories.

The championship was the second of Smith's season. He also won the inaugural Florida Ford Focus championship, winning twice in six races in The Sunshine State in January and February.
