Richwine Earns $3,125 in the Inaugural Susquehanna Showdown at SSP
Newberrytown, PA (October 7, 2006) - An action-packed afternoon of racing at the Susquehanna Speedway Park found Scott Richwine winning the Inaugural Late Model Susquehanna Showdown presented by Insinger Performance Fuels and JTM Tire & Alignment.
Richwine had Al Shawver in his sight for 27 circuits. Then for the next 23, the only thing Richwine saw was an open track. And when the checkered flag fell, Richwine, the late model track title winner at Winchester Speedway, took home a record $3,125, the most ever paid for a limited late model race in Pennsylvania. In addition, Richwine received a Hoosier spec tire from Miller's Racing Parts and W&W Racing Tires and an AFCO coil-over spring. He picked up $100 for leading lap 35 complements of KRS Graphics.
All the money in the world couldn't get the one thing Richwine wanted at the track - his father. "Dad is in the hospital," Richwine said. "I wish he could be here to be part of this." Patience, something Richwine has adopted since getting out the area, was the key to defeating a field of 43 cars that entered the inaugural Susquehanna Showdown.
"[Shawver] was good in turns 3 and 4," Richwine said. "We were good at the other end of the speedway. "So, I wanted for the track to come to us. I though a few times he might spin out, but hedidn't. Nobody touched when we were racing close and that's what happens when you can race
against great drivers like Al Shawver."
Richwine started in the third spot and moved by Mark Billet for the runner-up spot before the first lap was completed. Shawver had the lead by six-car lengths by lap 2 but Richwine cut that gap in half by lap 5.
The first of several cautions came out on lap 6 when Doug Burkholder lost his fuel cap. Speedway officials had to stop Burkholder to direct him to the pit area where crew members quickly replaced it, returning him to the track in time of the green flag.
Richwine challenged Shawver in a side-by-side duel over the next four laps before Carl Graves had apparent engine problems and stopped on the frontstretch.
The front runners continued to race close until lapped traffic came into play on lap 25. Shawver closed on the slower car driven by Charlie Potts, which allowed Richwine to take a more aggressive move in turn 2.
Richwine finally got beside Shawver as the two maneuvered through the second turn. He eventually got the lead in the same turn during the completion of lap 27.
Shawver praised Richwine for his patience and courteous pass. "He passed me clean," Shawver said. "He raced me good throughout the entire race."
Mike Duck's car stopped on the frontstretch on lap 33 and two more cautions on lap 36 and 38 slowed the momentum of the race. Race officials stopped the cars on lap 38 for a refueling period.
When racing resumed, Richwine had the dominant car proven by his eight-car lead before the race was slowed again on lap 42 when Justin Ehrhardt stopped his car in turn 4. Ehrhardt did the same on lap 47.
Shawver was second followed by Gene Knaub, Carl Billet and Scott McCann Jr. Knaub finished third in a car that was owned by Ronnie Frye with a borrowed engine from Larry Baer. Mark Billet, Baer, Andy Friese, Jerry Bard and Arlin Brougher completed the top 10.
Graves, Richwine, Shawver, McCann and Baer won heats for the 43 entries. Les Hare won the C
Main and Gerry Stutting Jr. won the B Main.
In ARDC Midget action, 2005 ARDC Champion Ray Bull passed early leader Paul Kline on the fifth circuit and never looked back. Andy Martin and Donnie Trent followed Bull to the finish in second and third place. Kline and A.J. Ernesto completed the top five. Heat race winners were also Kline and Ernesto.
Mike Goodwin led 198 of the 200 lap Xtreme Stock Car Enduro feature. He defeated Tommy Slanker, Keith Bissinger, Kevin Higgins and Trevor Stark en route to the victory and second straight 200 lap enduro win.
Kurt Welsh led all 15 laps for the Classic Car feature victory over Joe Snodgrass, Glenn Elliott, Jim Crocker and Bill Brown. Heat race winners were Joe Snodgrass and Jack Yingling.
Daryl Sipe was victorious in the York Haven Auto Sales Mini Van feature over Butch Richcreek and Brandon Ort.
In the Great American School Bus Race, Jeff Ebersole picked up the win over Van Baker and Keith Walls.
