Automakers sold 1,354,365 vehicles in September, down from a sub par August, which recorded 1,487,393 units sold. Of total September sales, International nameplates accounted for 631,488 units – bringing the group market share to a total of 46.6 percent for the month and 45.9 percent year-to-date.

GM held onto its No. 1 sales ranking in the U.S., although the automaker continued its sales decline at 3.1 percent for the month. Thanks to heavy summer incentives, Ford had a breakaway month at last, up 4.6 percent and just enough to outsell Toyota by a mere fraction. Thanks to help from healthy truck sales, Chrysler’s sales rose 3.7 for the month, but not enough to secure the No. 3 spot.

Toyota again proved the real story of the month, breaking September sales records left and right. Combined, Toyota Motor Sales USA recorded best-ever September sales of 222,950 vehicles, an increase of 20.2 percent over September 2005. Calendar-year-to-date (CYTD) sales total 1,928,496 units, up 12 percent over the same period last year. The Toyota division was up 21.3 percent; Lexus, up 12.1 percent; and Scion had its best-ever September with 16,195 units sold.

Lower gas prices were of benefit to Nissan’s truck segment during the month, as total light truck sales for the automaker rose 2.7 percent over last year. Sales were particularly strong for the Pathfinder (up 19.7 percent year-over-year) and Murano (up 14.8 percent year-over-year).
