News from JAMA Europe, Issue No.4, 2006 Edition

1) Restructuring Passenger Car Taxation in the EU?

There is currently no harmonisation of passenger car taxation in
the European Union. The 25 EU Member States all have their own
individual tax structures and rates, which results in significant
differences in new car prices amongst some of them. In the face
of this reality, the European Commission started to take relevant
action last year.

2) EU Production Up by 9.7% in 2005 Fiscal Year

During fiscal 2005 (April 2005 to March 2006 in Japan), JAMA
members produced 1,420,391 vehicles in the EU25, which equates to
a 9.7% growth from the previous fiscal year (up from 1,295,259
units). This represents a high proportion of the total number of
Japanese vehicles sold in the EU.

3) SAE J-2727 - Simpler Leakage Test for the MAC Directive

Directive 2006/40/EC relating to emissions from air-conditioning
systems in motor vehicles (also known as the MAC Directive)
requires manufacturers to ensure that, from certain dates, leakages
from those air-conditioning systems (using fluorinated greenhouses
gases with a global warming potential higher than 150) do not exceed
40 grams of fluorinated GHG per year for single evaporators and 60
grams per year for dual-evaporator systems.

4) Time Machines - Essay by Peter Nunn

There are not many cars around today that have been in production
for 40 years and are still topping the sales charts.
The Toyota Corolla which celebrates its 40th birthday in October
2006, however, is one such model.
