HOUSER WINS BIG IN THE MOPAR HEMI CHALLENGE AT AUTO CLUB DRAGWAY

 

            FONTANA, Calif. - Qualifying is complete at the Inaugural NHRA
Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N at California Speedway's Auto Club
Dragway.  Saturday's action included the Mopar Hemi Challenge, a special
"race within a race" that pitted competitors in NHRA's Super Stock H/A class
against each other for a winner-take-all $5,000 purse.

Rick Houser scored the win in the Mopar Hemi Challenge.  The Pasadena,
Calif., resident wheeled his '68 Barracuda to the win over Mission Viejo,
Calif., resident Michael Ogburn with an 8.877-second, 149.56 mph pass.
Ogburn ran his '68 Barracuda 8.899 seconds at 148.64 mph, giving Houser a
margin of victory of approximately nine feet.

In final qualifying for the NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals, David Beckley,
Wildomar, Calif., overtook the No. 1 qualifying spot in Comp Eliminator.
Yesterday's top qualifier, Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz., ended the day as
the second place qualifier.  Rancho Cucamonga racer Vinnie Deceglie
qualified fifth.

Alta Loma's Ryan McClanahan remained the top qualifier in Super Stock and
the former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor is also the No. 8
qualifier in Stock Eliminator.  The No. 2 qualifier in Super Stock is Jimmy
DeFrank of Chatsworth, Calif., and McClanahan's father, Brian, is the No. 5
qualifier.  Fred Moreno of La Verne, Richard Salcido of Whittier and Houser
are also in the top 10 qualifying spots.

In Stock Eliminator, Bob Mulry, Gilroy, Calif., drove his '74 Firebird to
the No. 1 spot and Modesto, Calif., racer Don Wann is in second place.
Riverside residents Don Forester and Ken Etter are the No. 3 and 4
qualifiers, respectively, and Alta Loma's Bryan Phillips is No. 10.

Del Cox Jr., Downey, Calif., is the best qualifier in Top Comp and Chip
Rumis, Ramona, Calif., is No. 2.

            Racing continues Sunday at Auto Club Dragway at California
Speedway at 8 a.m. with final eliminations.  Tickets for the event are $20.
