OPENING DAY OF QUALIFYING COMPLETE AT NHRA PACIFIC SPORTSNATIONALS

FONTANA, Calif. - The Inaugural NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by
K&N kicked off today at Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway.  The
three-day event features more than 400 racers in eight categories vying for
valuable points leading to NHRA national championships and a share of the
more than $50,000 purse.

            In the opening day of qualifying, Dean Carter of Glendale,
Ariz., heads up Comp Eliminator qualifying in his A/Nostalgia dragster.
Wildomar, Calif., racer David Buckley drover his '63 Corvette to the No. 2
spot.  Ross Wilson of Alta Loma is the ninth qualifier.

            Ryan McClanahan, Alta Loma, Calif., leads the Super Stock
qualifiers.  The former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor is
campaigning an '06 Colbalt in Super Stock and an '02 Firebird in Stock
Eliminator where his is qualified No. 8.  Dominic Camera, Tustin, Calif., is
the No. 2 Super Stock qualifier in his '87 Camaro.  McClanahan's father,
Brian, is the fifth place qualifier in Super Stock and Upland resident Frank
Grossi is No. 6.  

            The No. 1 qualifier in Stock Eliminator is Bob Mulry of Gilroy,
Calif., wheeling his '74 Firebird to the top spot.  Don Wann, Modesto,
Calif., in his '73 Satellite is the second place qualifier and another Alta
Loma racer, Bryan Phillip, is in the No. 10 spot.

            Del Cox Jr. of Downey, Calif., set the pace in Top Comp while
Paul Gladden, Tracy, Calif., is in the second spot.

The NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N continues Saturday and
Sunday.  Saturday's action will feature qualifying and time trials beginning
at 8 a.m. as well as the Mopar Hemi Challenge.  The wheel-standing Super
Stockers in the Mopar Hemi Challenge will run first round of eliminations at
noon.  Also on Saturday, Top Comp and Comp Eliminator qualifying is
scheduled at 11 a.m. and they will run first round at 5 p.m.  

Tickets for the NHRA Pacific SPORTSnationals presented by K&N are $20
Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 12 and under are admitted free with a
