Final 34 Champions Crowned as 34th Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals End
TOPEKA, Kan. (Sept. 29, 2006) - The 34th annual Tire Rack(r) SCCA Solo
National Championships came to a close Friday, crowning the final 34 of
the 72 National Champions for the 2006 season. The event marked an
all-time record for number of competitors, with 1169 drivers taking part
over the course of four days.
In the final two days of competition, there were both upsets and
predictable results. Some of the highlights included:
Shelbi Zigler, of Bothell, Wash., ended Kyung Wooton's five-year run of
C Stock Ladies. Zigler trailed after the first day of competition, but
was nearly a second faster on the East course in her Team Pajama/Kumho
Pontiac Solstice. Wooton held on for second, 0.530-second behind.
Nationals rookie Bryan Heitkotter, of Fresno, Calif., drove his Toyota
MR2 to a 0.091-second win over Paul Brown, of Los Alamos, N.M. It is
Brown's sixth runner-up finish in 22 attempts at scoring that elusive
first National Championship.
Andrew McKee, of San Jose, Calif., won the battle of the turbo Mazdas in
Street Modified 2, surpassing first day leader Erik Strelnieks, of
Austin, Texas, in his Kumho/A.R.E./Sias Tuning Mazda RX7 and winning by
0.102-second. It is McKee's fifth National Championship.
Matthew Braun, of Northville, Mich., topped the biggest field of the
week in the final heat, winning Super Stock by 0.318-second in his
PowerPlug Lotus Elise. Ian Stewart moved up to finish second in his
Porsche 911 GT3.
