Punch Telematix Selects Telit Wireless Solutions’
RALEIGH, N.C.--Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based m2m mobile technology arm of Telit Communications (LSE:TCM), today announced that Punch Telematix, a leading supplier of telematics applications, has selected Telit’s GM862-Quad module for implementation in Punch Telematix’s CarBox automotive solution.
Telit’s module will play an integral role in transmission of data for the CarBox system, which tracks the movements of all fleet vehicles and goods, compiles comprehensive reports, and transmits business-relevant data, including information on the position and speed of a vehicle, as well as any start or stop events.
“The GM862 gives the CarBox an extremely powerful GSM/GPRS module which completely satisfies our high demands in terms of functional range and quality,” said Mark van Quickelberghe, Director of Product Management at Punch Telematix.
CarBox can easily be built into any vehicle, giving it advanced mobile telematics functions such as a fast-track GPS receiver for positioning, and a GSM/GPRS modem for wireless connectivity. Connected to the ignition, this intelligent box transmits data to the monitoring base, keeping it constantly informed on the vehicle’s movements. This device also facilitates mileage monitoring, providing the back office with valuable information about how far the vehicles have been driven, allowing for instant cost assignments and service scheduling, which prove very important since regular service and maintenance increase a vehicle’s service life and resale value. To satisfy the latest security requirements, the CarBox is also equipped with automotive sensors that can detect when a car is involved in an accident or is being towed.
Punch Telematix originally used the GM862-PCS for the company’s fleet management needs, starting a collaboration with Telit that is now into its third year. The company now uses the latest generation of quad-band-enabled Telit modules, the GM862-Quad. Measuring only 44 x 44 x 6.7 mm and weighing just 23 grams, this extremely temperature-resistant module (-30°C to +80°C) has proven to be very stable. Supporting frequency bands ranging from 824 MHz to 1900 MHz, the module can be used anywhere GSM is available.
There are at least ten times more machines, equipment, vehicles, and robots than there are humans in the world, creating a critical need to transfer information efficiently between machines or from machines to humans. The relatively new m2m industry delivers increased efficiency, time savings, improved customer orientation, and greater flexibility. According to ABI Research, the m2m market in North America is expected to generate sales of over ten million units in 2007 and have an annual growth of 32% through 2011.
