VENTURA HOSTS WESTERN MIDGETS SATURDAY;

KAPLAN TRUMPS SHASTA USAC/BCRA MIDGET FIELD

 

 

            Ventura (Calif.) Raceway plays host to the USAC Western Midget Car Series Saturday night and point leaders Jerome Rodela and Chase Barber will try to become the fifth different race winner there this season. Garrett Hansen won there in April, Robby Flock won in May, Chris Rahe won in June and Tyler Brown won in July.

 

            Barber trails defending series champion Rodela by 84 points in the current standings. He closed the gap slightly despite a 19th-place finish at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson, Calif. Saturday. Rodela did not compete at Shasta.

 

            Ryan Kaplan and his Platinum Powder Coating/JP's Paint & Body Stealth/Mopar captured the 40-lap USAC/BCRA Shasta feature, leading the final 17 laps after passing Bobby Grewohl on lap 24. Evan Margeson led the first 17 laps, then Grewohl paced six before yielding to the fast qualifying Kaplan. Grewohl finished second, ahead of Stuart Birkinbine, Spence Gatrell and Ben Petter.
