News From USW: Mecklenburg County Commissioners Issue Support Resolution for Charlotte's Continental Tire Workers
CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Sept. 20, 2006--News From USW: United Steelworkers (USW) Local 850 members received public support last night in their struggle against their Charlotte employer, Continental Tire. A resolution was passed by the Mecklenburg County Commissioners acknowledging that Continental Tire has abandoned most of its North American operations, leaving thousands of workers, families and communities devastated."It's about time the government supported working people," said Mark Cieslikowski, USW Local 850 president. "Continental Tire has broken national laws and international labor standards."
The resolution states that the Mecklenburg County Commissioners expect all employers to treat their employees fairly and equitably regardless of their affiliations. The resolution encourages all employers in the county to support fair and reasonable labor practices.
"It is necessary for community leaders to support workers when global corporate monsters run over members and families in the community," Cieslikowski added.
"The passage of the resolution demonstrates that our struggles are not in vain," said Mark West, USW Local 850 member. "It is comforting to know we are united as a community in wanting Continental Tire to do what is right and fair."
