Press Announcement / Invitation to the Press

Dear editor, we would appreciate you announcing this event

in your media (calendar of events):

Transmissions experts from around the world meet in Berlin: the 2006 Transmissions Symposium

Four days of information about transmissions / Programme online now

From 4 to 7 December 2006, transmission experts from all over the world will be meeting in Berlin for the "5th International CTI Symposium Innovative Automotive Transmissions". The programme includes two congress days with ten plenary sessions and nine parallel series of lectures, an introduction and in-depth theoretical day as well as a transmission comparison test drive. Currently, 65 suppliers will be presenting their products at the accompanying Transmission Expo. The programme is available now at: www.transmission-symposium.com <http://www.transmission-symposium.com/>

Transmissions are an increasingly important part of car manufacture: customers are demanding smoother gear changes and a more economical drive while legislators are tightening emissions requirements - a goal which is only to be reached through intelligent transmission solutions.

The car industry's transmission concepts in response to these requirements are to be showcased at the 2006 Transmissions Symposium, hosted by the Car Training Institute.

More than 70 international speakers will discuss the future of different transmissions concepts at the Symposium under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ferit Küçükay, Director of the Institute of Automotive Engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig.

International experts will talk about the future development of transmissions at the plenary sessions: areas of application and the focus of development for automatic transmissions will be discussed, as will the technical and commercial efficiency of hybrids and how transmission development can contribute to an efficient driving dynamic. The programme will also include a comparison between parallel hybrid systems for conventional stepped automatic transmissions and dual-clutch transmissions.

The speakers will include Hans-Georg Härter, Chairman of the Board of ZF Sachs AG; Dr Andreas Truckenbrodt, Executive Director of the DaimlerChrysler Corporation Hybrid Development Center; Dr Gerhard Wagner, Vice President of ZF Getriebe GmbH; Dr Carsten Breitfeld, Head of Transmissions Development at BMW AG; Minoru Kurosawa, Senior Vice President of transmissions manufacturer Jatco Ltd.; Craig Renneker, Chief Engineer Automatic Transmissions at Ford Motor Company; Dr Steffen Berns, Executive Vice President of Robert Bosch GmbH and Dr Robert Fischer, Executive Vice President of AVL List GmbH.

More than 60 speakers will explain various aspects of transmissions development in nine parallel series of lectures. Alongside general themes such as trends in development, efficiency potential and test stand technology, the lectures will also deal with manual transmissions, automated and automatic transmissions, dual-clutch transmissions and CVTs, transmissions for hybrid powertrains, transmissions components and manufacturing technologies, lubrication, tribology, hydraulics, all-wheel drive, clutches, electronics and mechatronics, gear changing, and testing.

The speakers at these lectures are not only transmissions experts for car manufacturers such as Audi, Fiat Powertrain, Porsche, Subaru and Volkswagen, they are also representatives for suppliers such as LuK, AVL List, NSK Deutschland and Magna Steyr.

Transmission Expo

The accompanying Transmission Expo event will be showcasing new models and concepts in an area of over 1,000 sq m on 5 and 6 December 2006. This year, 65 companies will be coming to introduce their products, in comparison to 50 companies last year. A list of all exhibitors and sponsors is available on the Internet at www.transmission-symposium.com

The supporting programme

The introduction day on 4 December 2006 is directed mainly at people who are new to the industry and those who have crossed over from others. Experts from the University of Braunschweig will provide an overview of the basics of vehicle transmissions.

The "transmissions week" will be rounded off on 7 December 2006 with two parallel highlights: participants can experience and compare the newest transmission concepts and prototypes in a transmission comparison test drive at the ADAC Driving Safety Centre in Berlin Brandenburg/Linthe. Or they can opt for the theory instead and expand their knowledge at special in-depth lectures on the subject of transmissions for hybrid powertrains. Six speakers will be giving an overview of the concepts of hybrid powertrains as well as the transmissions available for this alternative powertrain technology.
