SCORE PRIMM 300 Challenges G&R Racing To The Limits
Mesa, Arizona (September 16, 2006) - It was high noon on the dry lake bed at
Primm, Nevada. Seated upon three 39" BF Goodrich Baja T/A KR tires was
SCORE rookie sensation, Garron Cadiente, smiling and chatting with
DIRTsports world-class photographer, Boyd Jaynes. Jaynes poised slightly
before firing shots of Cadiente for a soon to be published magazine feature
called, "On The Edge."
Race day had just begun.
An hour later, the #38 G&R Racing trophy truck left the start line of the
2006 SCORE PRIMM 300, with a transparent bull's eye affixed to the back of
the truck. Weeks earlier, SCORE announced Cadiente had drawn position
number one and rumors bounded throughout the race community that "they"
would be charging hard after the rookie desert racer.
After a ceremonious handshake from SCORE CEO, Sal Fish, Garron Cadiente
charged his Geiser-built trophy truck from the line hopeful of a top-three
finish. Leading the world's foremost class of top professional off road
truck racers across the barren Southern Nevada desert was the winner of this
year's SCORE San Felipe 250. However, that win was six-months prior and
here he was at the PRIMM 300.
Cadiente sped along the dry lake bed setting a fast tempo in the first five
miles and by race mile ten; his race day hopes began to crumble apart.
The #38 trophy truck suffered a sheared brake caliper bolt. Stopping
alongside of the race course to address the problem, Cadiente heard the
first scream of an 800 horsepower motor approaching him. It wasn't long
before the freight train of the world's top drivers passed by. With the #38
running again, less any brakes, Garron limped the truck into the first pit
where they suffered yet another problem, this time a computer issue with the
powerful motor. Cadiente's mindset was to get the truck around the track
with a solid finish, but that wasn't going to happen on this day.
Sidelined by daunting challenges, Cadiente was forced to watch the race from
a rock in the barren desert.
In the meantime, his teammate, Ron Whitton, was threading the needle of
broken race trucks alongside the course as he drove the #39 trophy truck
through the difficult terrain.
Ron explained, "The attrition was incredible. Throughout the first lap we
passed a fleet of trophy trucks broken on the side of the course. Since we
started in the back of the field, our strategy was to run a smart race. We
were destined to mix it up with the leading Class 1 cars and that we did."
With the crew working feverishly on the #38 ignition problem, the G&R Racing
race command began focusing on lap and split times for the #39 trophy truck.
Soon, it was apparent the #39 was clearly moving through the field.
After fighting his way through the field for 230 miles, Whitton turned the
#39 truck over to Cadiente for the final 78 miles. Not long after climbing
into the driver's seat, Cadiente suffered a power steering belt failure.
Repaired and underway in only a few minutes, the power steering belt came
off yet again as Cadiente rolled into the pits. Racing against the clock,
Team Manager Brian Godfrey passed the news that the #39 could not reach the
next checkpoint in the allotted timeframe.
As a result of the challenges and mechanical failures, Cadiente and Whitton,
along with the rest of the G&R Racing crew called it a night after a
disappointing performance at the Primm 300.
"It was a long day," said Cadiente. "We had a few problems early that put
us out of contention and then eventually took us out of the race. The #38
truck really needed a solid finish to keep us in the battle for the point's
race, but it just didn't come together for us today. We'll be coming on
strong at the Baja 1000."
